Tampa Bay Saltwater

After a recent collecting trip to Florida I decided to set up an 8 foot reef tank exclusively with high quality Florida live rock, since Florida rock has the most diverse life forms on it.  I searched the internet and Tampa Bay Saltwater came up for “Florida Live Rock”.  I placed an order for one box through a local store in my area (The Salty Critter) and was absolutely AMAZED at what I saw when I opened up the box.  All of the live rock was submerged in water.  I have never gotten live rock in where all of it was covered in water.   When I looked at the rock, I understood why it was submerged in water.  It was because of all of the sponges, tunicates and other life forms that were on the rock.  It was to guarantee that the organisms had a high probability of survival and not die off once entered into the tank.  Another thing that I noticed is that there was no foul odor coming from the bag, which I thought was strange since just about every live rock I have ordered had a foul odor form die-off.  Well, everything on the rock was alive and doing well.  I thought to myself that this must be a fluke.

A couple weeks later, I placed another order to arrive at my local airport and this time I decided to take pictures of the live rock to show everyone just what I experienced.  Not only did I get the same high-quality live rock, but there was even more life forms such as barnacles, oysters, tunicates, sponges and more on the rock, which is exactly what I would have expected.  I am amazed how awesome Tampa Bay Saltwater’s Aquacultured live rock is.  This is rock that was put in the ocean not too long ago and has come out excellent with no destructive effects to the environment.   The rock was placed in the ocean just as a shipwreck would be placed.   It is harvested when there is sufficient live forms on it.  I have heard other stories about how good the live rock was from Tampa Bay Saltwater and now I am hooked!!!  The tip that I will give you is to be sure to have a bucked with the salinity raised well above normal in order to flush out mantis shrimps because they are abundant in Florida waters.   Below is a series of pictures that I took of the live rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater.  After a bucket rinse, I immediately added the rock to my tank since it had been submerged in water and arrived the same day it was harvested.

The only downside to my experience is that I didn’t order enough rock and can’t wait to place yet another order.  I am 110% satisfied and highly recommend Tampa Bay Saltwater if you really want diverse life forms in your live rock.
